“New Alarm Bells About Chemicals and Cancer” in the NYT

The New York Times reported about a new 200 page report released by the President’s Cancer Panel in an article titled “New Alarm Bells About Chemicals and Cancer.” According to the article:

“The President’s Cancer Panel suggests other eye-opening steps as well, such as giving preference to organic food, checking radon levels in the home and microwaving food in glass containers rather than plastic.

In particular, the report warns about exposures to chemicals during pregnancy, when risk of damage seems to be greatest. Noting that 300 contaminants have been detected in umbilical cord blood of newborn babies, the study warns that: “to a disturbing extent, babies are born ‘pre-polluted.’ ”

I am impressed that the panel came to these conclusions and is finally giving people steps they can take to possibly prevent cancer. We have spent too long diagnosing and treating a problem which needs a solution. We have “approximately 100,000 chemicals in commercial use” (www.EPA.gov) and scientific research is all too often contradictory. But, as time goes by, we discover many of these chemicals once considered safe are actually harmful. And it is important to take action and err on the side of safety especially when it comes to children.
