Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag from Kid Concoctions

For my daughter’s birthday we are making ice cream in a bag with a friend. Normally, I am not a fan of making food in plastic, but it’s kind of a science experiment and a tasty treat in one, that she first saw on Kid Concoctions, so we are using plastic bags. If you have two jars that can nest inside one another, you can use those too. In ten minutes you have a creamy ice cream treat. Try adding mix ins to make different flavors. Mix ins we like are: Enjoy Life chocolate chips, strawberries, and blueberries. Try cutting off the edge of the bag and they can squeeze it out which makes it a soft serve treat.

We are using a recipe from crafts.kaboose.com‘s Homemade Ice Cream in a Bag: Summer Crafts for Kids:

What you’ll need:

  • 1 tablespoon sugar or agave
  • 1/2 cup milk or half & half or coconut milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon gluten free vanilla
  • 6 tablespoons rock salt (or regular salt)
  • 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc) or jar
  • 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bagor jar
  • Ice cubes

How to make it:

  1. Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag.
  2. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it.
  3. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully.
  4. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes.
  5. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully. Enjoy!
