The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics

A friend, who is expecting twins, told me about The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics site which tells you in detail about the dangerous ingredients lurking in your personal care products. There is a great article called No More Toxic Tub which reveals how many cancer causing chemicals lurk in baby products. Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep, which I have blogged about before, is a searchable database which allows you to look up products and ingredients to find out if the ingredients are linked to cancer, developmental & reproductive problems or allergies. It is a great place to begin if you want to green your bath products. Although the companies that make conventional baby products that contain these chemicals love to reassure us that there are just a little bit of these toxic substances in the products, many parents feel they would rather choose safer products.

The SmartMama.com on Simple Steps to Non-Toxic Kids has a great response to the companies who are trying to dismiss the concerns of mom bloggers who are trying to raise awareness about this issue. It is called: Oh, don’t worry, you’re just a mommy blogger & just a little bit of carcinogen is okay. I know this post is about cosmetics…but how cool is the SmartMama.com’s handheld x-ray device to test for lead, cadmium, chromium and more?

  • Cathy - Isn’t it funny how as we make better food choices it leads us to thinking about everything else that affects our bodies? Lately I have been thinking how fortunate I feel to have been sick which forced me to start looking at how we were eating and what we were putting on our bodies. As my kids enter the teen years, I feel good knowing they won’t be exposed to all the chemicals and junk out there trying to entice them. ewg.org is a great source that we have relied on for several years. Thanks for the great post.ReplyCancel
